“All that is common is wonderful”…

“One Together” is Danna Ruth Harvey’s sixth solo show at Chase Young Gallery. This harmonious exhibition is a curation of Harvey’s most recent paintings that explore the portrayal of ‘the sparrow’, in contemplating universal experiences within the human condition. In these expressive works, the sparrow is a symbol of individuality, with each depiction of the sparrow in the flock having something unique to its composition.  Working with oil paints, paper, and cloth, Harvey begins by creating graphite drawings atop birch panels, thoughtfully introducing color and the build-up of pigment. She employs a cold encaustic technique to finish each of her paintings, a translucent wax medium, created through a practice of layering that seeks to reflect the process of ice thawing, freezing, preserving, and containing over time.

Danna Ruth Harvey is a prolific artist who began her artistic career in her early 50’s. She received her BFA from the University of Houston and her MFA from Johnson State College in VT. Her work has been exhibited in galleries nationally including at Chase Young Gallery, Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans and at the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston. Harvey’s artworks are also in private, public, and corporate collections. She has had her work commissioned for published book covers including Pursuit by Erica Funkhouser and The Invisible Church by J. Pittman McGehee and Damon J. Thomas. Editorially, she has been featured in Boston Globe, Metropolitan Home, Houston Insider, and SouthWest Art. Harvey currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.

Artist Reception: Friday, April 2, 5 to 7 PM

“Seeking Serenade” is YoAhn Han’s second solo show at Chase Young Gallery. Referencing traditions and symbols from his Korean culture, the exhibition comprises a collection of new mixed-media works where Han employs materials such as watercolor, gouache, inks, and Yupo (a synthetic mylar-like paper) onto painted wood panels. These collaged works, ranging in size, depict floral motifs, layered and interwoven with recognizable human forms, that explore the contrasted union of life and death and the line between pleasure and pain.

Han received his MFA at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and obtained a Bachelors of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Han’s work has been shown internationally, in the United States, South Korea, and the Netherlands. Recent solo shows include “Botanical Rhapsody” at Chase Young Gallery, “Metamorphic Desire” at Essex Art Center (Jan, 2018), “My Princess, Bari” at ARTMORA Gallery in New York,  “Alluring Confinement” at the Artlery 160 in Boston, and 매혹적 가두어짐 (Enchanting Box) in Seoul, Korea. His work has also been exhibited in several group shows including “Summer Palette” at Chase Young Gallery in Boston, Seventh Juried Exhibition at Prince Street Gallery in New York, ART BLOSSM Exhibition at ARTMORA NJ, and Sanqtuary at Distillery Gallery in Boston. He has been featured in publications such as Harper’s Magazine and New England Home.
